Technology@lemmy.world•Superconductors that operate at room temperature and no electricity loss? Harvard team of physicists map samples at millionths of a meter to correlate behavior with temp, pressure, stoichiometry, etc.English
2 monthsWith a superconductor, you can create a much more powerful electromagnet through which the coil will still produce a lot of voltage even when turning very slowly. Thus, you can use a much simpler gearbox or even just skip it entirely.

2 monthsMy favorite application for room-temp superconductors is low-speed generators. They have exactly one application, but it’s big: Wind towers without a giant gearbox. Wind power is cheap, but without the truck-sized gearbox with a bazillion moving parts that you can’t lift without the biggest cranes known to man, it’s even cheaper.

3 monthsI can’t be arsed to dig up the equation, but it may mean that the wind has 200 times more usable energy, which I think is a cube function of its speed. Wouldn’t be 2000 knots in that case

Alright, this gives me crazy heebie jeebies. Something about how close that horizon is, combined with the fact that beyond it is just nothing, absolute nothing, for light-years in most directions; hits the buttons for claustrophobia, agoraphobia, acrophobia, and thalassophobia at the same time.
I have never felt happy about the fact that I was born too early to go space mining til now. No thanks. Maybe if I get to keep a ton or two of native platinum for myself, otherwise no thanks.
