  • Meta is largely the reason for the current state of the world via their purposeful boosting of alt-right talking points. They’ve helped incite a genocide ffs. They’re not actively on the streets shooting people but this is what the company pushed for

I’m not American but I am in tech and have been unemployed since January and even though my financial situation is grim, Meta and Palantir are two companies I would never, ever work for or even apply to. There’s always plenty of other companies to apply to (which is what I did and I start somewhere tomorrow!)

  • Why is a company or person that doesn’t exist physically in Utah at all responsible for adhering to Utah’s laws?

This line of thinking is dangerous as it allows companies to disregard any sane legislation as long as their servers are located in a “safe” place. A large portion of websites accessible from Canada are served from US servers, for example. American companies ignoring Canadian laws because they don’t have Canadian-based servers would be a nightmare

If a company makes any money off users in a geographic area (which includes ad view revenue), they have to follow the rules there which is a GOOD thing - even if it’s ridiculous in this case

Also endorsing governments selectively blocking websites is just bad for obvious reasons

  • Would they actually be able to afford it? Investors have been throwing endless amounts of money onto the fire but in OpenAI’s case at least, it was all essentially bought like “I’ll pay you later, trust me”, right?

I’d assume convincing companies twice that you’re trustworthy enough to buy the world’s supply of RAM with an IOU wouldn’t be possible but I guess I thought the same thing for the first time as well

edit: either way, I’d take a longer period of expensive RAM if it meant a giant “fuck you” to the AI companies

  • It’s by no means Linux but I actually do find MacOS quite customisable, especially if you spend a lot of time in the command line. It’s going in the opposite direction in the last couple years of course but you could straight up run the i3 TWM in XQuartz on MacOS if you wanted to

What customisations do you find MacOS lacks?

  • I’m not sure we’re talking about the same people here. I’d hesitantly lend more sympathy to an American soldier more broadly fighting in this war but not to those who directly commit war crimes whether that be shooting (and worse) children or knowingly dropping bombs on schools or hospitals.

Anyone who doesn’t immediately know that’s wrong has something severely wrong with them

edit: and also yeah, regarding your point about Canada doesn’t really change anything. I’d feel exactly the same way regarding any Canadian soldier doing the same thing. While Canada is feeling quite nice right now compared to the USA, we’ve done and continue to do some absolutely vile shit, no question

  • Have you actually read into some of the shit Americans have done? I wouldn’t even want to fucking cooperate with anyone who took part in the My Lai massacre or anything else like that.

    To copy/paste from Wikipedia:

The Mỹ Lai Massacre […] was a United States war crime committed on 16 March 1968, involving the mass murder of unarmed civilians in Sơn Mỹ village, Quảng Ngãi province, South Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. At least 347 and up to 504 civilians, almost all women, children and elderly men, were murdered by U.S. Army soldiers. Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated, and some soldiers mutilated and raped children as young as 12.

    (emphasis mine)

edit: oh and the most justice that came of that was that one person got house arrest for three years
